Old Friend

Disclaimer: This is long.. and may be TMI. I am not complaining in any way.. just recalling my experience. :) And there are no pictures for your viewing pleasure. Just words.. Lots of words.

You think it is gone.. then it comes back and hits you like a ton of bricks.

I guess I will give you the ER story now.
A couple of Fridays ago, my husband and I were calling my doctor because I was sick.. I mean not keeping ANYTHING in my body. (throwing up or otherwise) When those two things hit you, it is the worst! But I was dealing with it, because you really have no idea what "morning sickness" is like until you experience it first-hand. I thought I was one of the lucky ones who do not throw up 14 times in one day like some other moms have told me. I felt sick all day, but was throwing up everything I ate or drank. I could feel my body getting weaker and weaker. So Kurt called the advice nurse. It was 11pm. She advised us to go to ER right away. I thought she was nuts, I mean I was fine, just a little tired.

When we got to the ER around 11:30pm, I was feeling horrible. I thought I was going to pass out at any moment. They took my blood, I peed in a cup.. and I waited. But as the hours passed, I was feeling better and better, I even ate a granola bar out of the vending machine and took a nap. We finally got called back to a room at about 3am. I changed into one of those silly little gowns and waited some more. The nurse came in, did the usual check up and said the doctor would be in shortly.

The doctor came in and talked to us for a little while. Basically he told me that I was over-reacting and to go buy the book "What to expect when you are expecting." We explained to him that I knew that throwing up was a part of pregnancy, but it was coupled with diarrhea and that is what I was worried about. He kind of rolled his eyes and said "Yes you are a little dehydrated, so we will give you some fluids and some medicine for the nausea and send you home."

Then we waited some more. I was really tired at this point and wanted to go home and just drink some more Gatorade. He made it seem like I was fine. Then the nurse came in with 2 HUGE bags of fluids. It was 2 liters of fluids. We asked the nurse why so much becuase the doctor had said I was only a little dehydrated. He told us that the doctors idea of little was that I was alive and breathing. I was so mad. That docotr made me feel like an idiot for even being there in the first place. and now it was 4am.

The nurse tried to get an IV in my right arm, (my left arm was already poked by the triage nurse) he kept poking through my vain. He was digging, wiggling, the poking with his finger, then wiggling some more. Kurt said he was getting a little woosy just watching. When he tried to flush my vain, he messed it up somehow and had to find a new spot. So he ended up putting the IV in the side of my wrist. What!? I have never seen that before.. and I know why. He stuck me with that needle and it hurt worse than the 5 minutes he spent wiggling in my arm. I was feeling sick at that point and threw up with half a needle in my arm. He didn't like that very much.

So I got my fluids and he said I was going to have to pee really bad when they were done. I did go to the bathroom, but only once and not any large amount like he said. I guess my body just soaked it up. Then we went home at 5:30 am. We were all tired.. and a little annoyed at the doctor. My diagnosis on my discharge papers.... Pregnancy Induced Vomitting!!! Seriously?

Well.. now that we have that all out.. I have felt fine ever since I got back from the ER. No real nausea or throwing up. I mean I have been tired.. but not sick. I thought.. maybe I didn't have morning sickness.. maybe it was just a bug. I feel fine now.

That was until last night. And this morning. Welcome back nausea and vomit. And along with that comes PEEING YOUR PANTS! No one told me about that part. They don't tell you that when you throw up.. you pee your pants too. Seriously. I can't help but just laugh. What kind of grown adults pees their pants. And I am supposed to teach this kid potty training one day..

I don't know you but I do know Barbie and I just had to comment on your story. How awful that you had to go through all that, then thought you were fine, and now your experiencing it again. The peeing your pants thing was too funny. Good Luck. It should'nt last too long. Amber

the ER can be the most awful place(i think i wrote before, they mixed up my pregnancy test). I will not go to one again, unless absolutely necessary. i would rather wait for my regular doctor.

glad you got a little break from the vomiting! now just hang in there for this round. i will be thinking of you and praying everything goes well!

My pregnancy ER experiences were all awful! And peed my pants almost every time I puked. It really starts to suck when you have a limited maternity wardrobe to work with.

Anyway sorry you are feeling yucky. I know it doesn't seem like it, but it will be over before you know it.

Ugh, that stinks! I never had to go to ER, like BOB said, it was better to wait for regular doctor... luckily I was always able to get right in tho!

I swear, I felt better the instant I hit 14 weeks. I had a few bouts here and there throughout the rest of my pregnancy where I'd puke and puke and puke for 3-5 days, but then it would get better.

And seriously, the moment, and I mean the MOMENT, I delivered Sam, I was ready to go through it again. It is all forgotten once your holding that precious baby in your arms!

And yes... I'm trying to convince the husband to let me join you and Angela in the prego world, but alas, my powers of persuasion or appearing to be far from powerful these days. :(

aww, I'm sorry it's been so tough, but as everyone says, it will all be worth it in the end.

on the subject of TMI, i threw up at least 3-4 times a day for my first 14 weeks and had the same issue you're having. you should have seen the faces when i would change clothes 2 times a day at work!

LOL at Carrie's comment! Yikes...I can only imagine all of this happening while teaching a crew of Jr. highers!

I'm sorry you've been sick, but remember sickness is a good sign! And at least you have an excuse for peeing your pants now :)Can't wait till I have an excuse too.

BIG HUG! I have the SAME ER story! I could just copy your post and use it! When I was prego with Peyton I was sick the whole 9 months, you forget it fast though =) And the ER visit was the absolute worst part ever, delivery will be a breeze now girlie! If you need any maternity cloths you are welcome to come by and shop in my big maternity closet! I got some winter clothes I will not be using now that are super cute!

oh my gosh!! You're pregnant!! That is SO wonderful-- congratulations. but I am so sorry to hear you've been sick, and that you had such a horrible experience. I'll be praying it goes away soon.
So excited for you though!! And, a new house too-- wow, it's been too long since I've stopped by, I am quite behind. :) I'm going to add you to my links so I remember to visit often!
Congrats again, on everything!

Oh my gosh, so sad :( Hopefully you'll be feeling better soon. It is so different for everyone but regardless, I can and WILL sympathize with you. I was a major weenie when I was preggo and I demand that all pregant people be babied like crazy! :) Um, yes, as with the peeing in the pants we will have to make sure you know several other things they never tell you. In person, not on the blog. That will definitely be TMI!
